ARML orientation guide

Hi everyone,

In preparation for ARML, Silas has written an orientation guide, available for download at http://stanford.edu/~moorxu/2012ARML/strategy/. Part 1 describes what you should expect at ARML, and Part 2 discusses teamwork and strategy. Part 2 also refers to some sample tests, which we've posted as well.

Practice materials and homework answers have been posted at http://stanford.edu/~moorxu/2012ARML/. Please take a look at them! We had a lot of team and relay rounds this week, more than we were able to get through at practice, so you'll be able to find something interesting there even if you went to practice.

5/27 practice reminder

Hi everyone, 

This is a reminder that our final practice will be today (Sunday), 5/27, 1pm-4pm at Stanford, in the basement of building 380. See http://stanford.edu/~moorxu/2012ARML/ for maps and directions. It is important for you to come and work with your team, so please come to practice if at all possible.

A number of team members proposed some team-building activities after practice, around 4pm-4:30pm, such as a trip to Jamba Juice. So you may want to stay for a bit after practice, and arrange transportation accordingly.

Please note that the Dumbarton Bridge is closed this weekend. See http://www.511.org/dumbartonbridge/DumbartonBrClosureMay2012/default.asp for alternate routes. Please do your best to come to practice on time.

Homework is due by the start of practice; please submit as in the instructions on the website.

As a reminder, homework is due before practice and should be submitted to the link posted on the website. For students on competitively selected teams, attendance is mandatory; if you feel that you need to miss practice, please email me before practice with an excuse.

New homework has also been posted at the above link. We have individual problems and proof problems this week. Submit your answers for the individual round homework to https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dHBQcU1icmY1STdLVHhYb1Z3Z1ZsZmc6MA; submit your proofs at the next practice. If you cannot come to practice, you can email your homework to me.

As a reminder, attendance and homework are mandatory for students on competitively selected teams, and highly recommended for everyone else. Regarding homework: ARML requires simplified answers. This means that answers involving sqrt(8) and sqrt(63) are not acceptable. Please make sure that you only take square roots of squarefree numbers, and rationalize your denominators.

The next practice will be at the same time and place as last time: Saturday, 5/12, 2pm-5pm in the basement of building 380 at Stanford.

We'll have our next SFBA ARML practice today (Saturday, 5/5) from 2pm to 5pm on the Stanford campus. We'll meet in the basement of building 380; there will be posted signs with room assignments. See http://stanford.edu/~moorxu/2012ARML/ for directions and a practice schedule.

Please note that this is a Saturday practice.
